Response from senator – October 10 2025

Not sure which specific message this was in response to, so I’ll just post it here on its own. Received October 10, 2025:

October 10, 2025

Dear Mr. Arthur,

Thank you for reaching out to my office to share your thoughts on President Trump’s abuse of power and threats to our democratic system. I apologize for the delayed response to your message. As your new Senator as of January 2025, I sincerely appreciate hearing from you.

Since January, I have heard from thousands of Michiganders expressing deep concern about the actions of the Trump Administration. I, too, am disturbed by his efforts to erode some of our most fundamental rights, and by his willingness to push aside the Constitution, our most sacred document.

The Trump Administration has attacked our First Amendment freedoms by targeting members of the press, universities, and labor unions. They have ignored judicial orders from the highest court in the land and challenged established divisions of power between our three branches of government. The Administration has removed U.S. citizen children from the country without due process and without giving their parents a chance to find alternative guardians. These are violations to guaranteed protections under the Constitution.

The U.S. Constitution dictates that any impeachment process must start in the U.S. House of Representatives. After the House votes to impeach a government official, the Senate then votes whether or not to convict. When I served in the House of Representatives, I voted twice to impeach President Trump. The first time was for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and the second for inciting the January 6 insurrection. As of today, the House has not begun any such impeachment process against President Trump during his second term in office. If the House does vote to impeach President Trump for a third time, I will do my Constitutional duty, follow the facts as they are laid out, and make an independent judgement.

As elected officials, it is our duty to protect the sanctity of the Constitution and safeguard our core values. We all swear an oath “to protect and defend the Constitution.” Without pushback when the President acts outside his authority, our entire democratic system is at risk. No one is above the law, and I intend to use my position in the Senate to make it known when leaders abuse their power or violate our principles.

Once again, sincere thanks for reaching out. I believe that engaging your elected officials is a critical component of our democracy and allows us to better represent you, so thank you for taking the time to get in touch.
