Dear Congressman – 13 August 2025

Latest letter to my congressional representative:

August 13, 2025

Dear Representative Huizenga,

I am deeply concerned with the authoritarian actions of the current Republican administration. Trump’s unjustified moves to federalize the D.C. police force and deploy the National Guard are based on lies and invented problems. These are the actions of a tyrant and dictator and are a blatant attempt to distract his supporters from actual issues such as our failing economy and the Republican cover-up of the Epstein files. How can you be so concerned about an authoritarian government in Burma and yet blindly support the cruel and illegal authoritarian actions of the Trump administration? Congress must take action or be held complicit in his crimes.

I urge you to support H.R. 51 to make the District of Columbia the 51st state in the union. The District of Columbia should not be a pawn in Trump’s petty games but deserves self-determination and full voting representation in Congress.

Sincerely,

Rev. Kenneth Arthur

Kalamazoo, MI 49009

Response received October 6, 2025. Rep. Huizenga is still defending the fascists…

Dear Rev. Arthur,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the National Guard presence in Washington, D.C., along with the D.C. Police. I always appreciate hearing from constituents and welcome this opportunity to respond.

On August 11, 2025, using his authority under Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, President Trump declared a Crime Emergency in the District of Columbia via Executive Order. This order required the Mayor of the District of Columbia to temporarily provide services of the Metropolitan Police Department for federal purposes.

Under this executive order, the crime rates in Washington, D.C. fell by 15% as of late August. Specifically, Mayor Bowser stated that violent crimes have decreased by 45% and carjackings, which are the most common crime in Washington D.C., have decreased by 87% since the increase in law enforcement presence. Since that time, Mayor Bowser has welcomed federal assistance in the effort to lower crime and restore safety in our nation’s capital.

I agreed with the President’s decision to address the dangerous crime and danger in D.C.
The underlying ?policies that have left our nation’s capital in a shameful, unsafe condition must also change. From Democrat members of Congress being carjacked — to an intern tragically losing their life while waiting for the metro, it is unacceptable. Even members of my staff have witnessed violent crime happening in our nation’s capital in broad daylight. Families from Michigan, tourists from around the country, and everyday commuters should be able to enjoy a safe experience in Washington, D.C.

Rest assured, should any related legislation come to the House Floor for a vote, I will keep your thoughts in mind.

Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me, and please do not hesitate to do so in the future. To stay up to date with the latest news on our work in Congress, you may sign up at huizenga.house.gov/forms/emailsignup/ to receive my e-newsletter, the Huizenga Huddle.
