Dear Representative Huizenga,
I’m writing to demand Rep. Bill Huizenga protect the Social Security Administration from DOGE’s workforce cuts, office closures, and service disruptions that will put the benefits of over 72 million Americans at risk. Trump and Musk are lying about fraud in the system, engaging in cuts and policy changes that will make it impossible for older people to use the system, and threatening the security of people’s personal data. All of this jeopardizes the stability of the SSA system.
What are you doing to protect this vital system? To make sure that people continue getting their benefit checks and assistance, it’s critical that you refuse to pass any budget or spending bill that doesn’t restore the SSA to full working capacity and re-open shuttered offices.
Sincerely,
Rev. Kenneth Arthur
Response received from Rep. Huizenga on March 26. Note that it’s a generic letter in support of Social Security and says nothing about opposing the damage Trump and Musk are doing:
Dear Mr. Arthur,
Thank you for contacting me regarding Social Security and Medicare. I always appreciate hearing from constituents and welcome this opportunity to respond.
I am committed to protecting Social Security and Medicare. In order to do that, I believe Republicans and Democrats must come together to ensure Social Security and Medicare will be there for current retirees as well as future generations.
Social Security and Medicare face several structural, financial, and demographic issues that jeopardize the stability of these programs. If no changes are made, according to the Social Security and Medicare Trustee reports, Social Security will become insolvent by 2033 forcing a 21% mandatory cut. Medicare Part A will be depleted by 2036, resulting in an 11% cut. We cannot allow this to happen.
I am leading my colleagues in convening Members of Congress to collaborate on ways to improve our country’s fiscal and economic condition. This is why I introduced the Fiscal Commission Act. The Commission will consist of Members of Congress as well as individuals from the private sector with the goal of identifying policies to improve the country’s fiscal situation in the medium term and achieve sustainable debt-to-GDP in the long term. Importantly, the Commission will also focus on improving the solvency of critical programs like Social Security and Medicare, for which federal trust funds exist. This legislation will force Congress to finally address the financial health of our nation. Last Congress, this legislation passed the House Budget Committee on a bipartisan basis following testimony from myself and my colleagues – both Democrat and Republican – regarding the danger our fiscal state poses to Medicare and Social Security.
For nearly 80 years, American workers have found solace in knowing that upon their retirement, Social Security would offer them security, support, and stability. Medicare has equally been a monumental source of financial security and vital health protections. These are promises that cannot be neglected. Republicans and Democrats must work together to protect and preserve these important programs.
Again, I appreciate you contacting me, and please do not hesitate to do so in the future. To stay up to date with the latest news on our work in Congress, you may sign up at huizenga.house.gov/forms/emailsignup to receive my e-newsletter
Sincerely,
Bill Huizenga
