Response from senator – March 19 2025

I couldn’t figure out which letter this was in response to… so I’m posting it here stand-alone.

Dear Rev. Arthur,

Thank you for contacting me about Social Security. I appreciate you taking the time to express your views. Hearing directly from Michiganders like you helps inform me of the issues that matter to our state. I am so grateful for your input.

Since its creation in 1935, Social Security has helped seniors achieve a dignified retirement. I have heard from Michiganders who are concerned about cuts to Social Security. While Congress has a responsibility to take seriously the threat of our growing national debt, we cannot break our promise to Americans who have worked their entire lives and contributed into this program. With more than 2.2 million Michiganders depending on these benefits, I strongly oppose proposals such as raising the retirement age or privatizing Social Security, which is why I have consistently supported legislation such as the Social Security Fairness Act during my time in Congress. One of the most valuable features of Social Security is how it accounts for inflation, which is why I have consistently sought to increase the cost-of-living adjustment for the program. With consumer prices for food and medicine increasing for many seniors, I will continue to fight to protect hard earned Social Security benefits. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Senate to craft and support responsible legislation that honors our commitment to our nation’s seniors and people with disabilities. We must take action to ensure Social Security’s long-term solvency for future generations in a way that does not put hard-earned benefits in jeopardy. Whenever Congress considers legislation related to Social Security, please be assured I will keep your views in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to reach out again if there is something else you would like to share with me. I always enjoy hearing directly from Michiganders.
